Tommy and Julie Paxton: Bio

Tommy and Julie Paxton

A Tom Paxton, not the Tom Paxton
Butthe Tommy Paxton!

There once was a little boy named Tommy who would go to Lake Winnepasaukee with his family in the summertime. It was a long car drive to the lake, and on the radio he would hear “The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind,” and “Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff.” The folk movement of the early sixties was going strong and revolution was in the air. Tommy was not yet ten, but there were deep stirrings going on within him as well. For he was moving into manhood and wanted people to stop calling him Tommy -- and start calling him Tom, which sounded much more grown-up. He did not realize that in Greenwich Village - not too far from this New Hampshire lake where he stood skipping rocks – a man with the very same name was at the vortex of this folk craze that dominated the radio that summer: the Tom Paxton. The boy could not know that by desperately wanting those around him to start calling him Tom, he would forever be relegating himself to the status of a Tom Paxton – never the Tom Paxton.

As the boy became a man who entertained family groups under the name Tom Paxton, he found that he was often answering the question, “Are you ‘the’ Tom Paxton?” This was understandable since “the” Tom Paxton was possibly the most prolific, and probably the best, children’s song writer out there. To avoid confusion and a future of being merely “a” Tom Paxton, he changed back to his boyhood name of Tommy Paxton. Now he is “the” Tommy Paxton, and the circle is complete.
